The Narrows
In Zion National Park it’s possible to hike the narrowest part of Zion Canyon for many miles in the North Fork of the Virgin River. Towering walls, sometimes 1,000 feet high, create cool, echoing chambers. Vegetation springs from those walls, protected from the scorching heat of Utah summer. As you wade upstream, sometimes in chest deep water, you ask the ancient ones forgiveness for trespassing in such a holy place. Not feeling worthy to go on, but pulled by wonder to continue.
