Loreto I
This work is part of an ongoing original series of Travel Art. I take a small art kit with me whenever I travel, and each piece in this series has it’s own story. It may have been created at 30,000 feet, in a quiet corner of an airport during a layover, or on a café table somewhere in the world.
In March of 2023 I traveled to Loreto, a small coastal town in Baja California Sur Mexico. This was my second trip to Loreto, the first being just weeks before the pandemic in 2020. It was shortly after that first trip that I began to use paint, paper, color and texture to both release, and capture my world.
In 2023, this new dimension brought happy afternoons crafting the day’s memories into something tangible I could hold and take with me. Mexican music, traffic, and voices floated through the kitchen as I worked at a small table with hands, that just that day, had touched a baby gray whale. In my two Loreto works you can find pieces of an egg carton from the market down the street, a receipt, and images stamped on a discarded paper bag from a local restaurant.
